Methodology
How we measure
- Sample
- Public Instagram accounts with at least 5,000 followers that OwlStat reads every day, with a reading in the last 3 days and one about 30 days earlier (between 27 and 33 days ago, the closest to 30).
- Formula
- Monthly growth = (followers now - followers 30 days ago) ÷ followers 30 days ago × 100. The tier is the follower count now.
- Left out
- Private accounts; accounts that agencies track in bulk (workspaces with 50+ accounts) or that come from partner lists, whose growth is often bought; changes above 100% in either direction, which are bad reads or renamed accounts.
- Bias
- Not a random sample of Instagram: these are accounts someone looked up or tracked on OwlStat, which leans toward brands and creators who watch their numbers.
- Statistics
- Medians and percentiles, not averages: one account that went viral would pull an average up and hide the typical month.
- Engagement
